Once upon a time there was a Chef called Heston who opened a small restaurant called the Fat Duck. At first, he served only simple French classics but gradually, as is the way of things, the Chef's curiosity got the better of him and he began thinking up more unusual dishes, such as Snail Porridge and Chocolate Wine. There was even talk of a meringue that made diners snort plumes of vapour, like a dragon. Word spread and reached the ears of the Executives who ran a television channel, and they summoned the Chef to their glass fortress. 'We command you to create six Fantastical Feasts', they said. 'These must be based on history, but you may draw on fairytales and legends. We should warn you that the Quest will involve journeys to Transylvania in search of the legendary Leech Recipe of Sibiu, and to the Black Forest to eat the eyes of the Wild Boar of Munstertal. You must resist the temptations of the Burlesque Girls, and you must turn chocolate cake into a raging fireball and chicken's testicles into jelly beans. There will be hunting for hallucinogenic mushrooms and cooking with Play-Doh. Out of this, you must create the most magical dishes imaginable'. 'Well, how about lickable wallpaper, a savoury Zoom lolly, a chocolate-covered iceberg, a golden egg and an edible graveyard?' offered the Chef. 'It's a start', said the Executives. 'Oh, and once you have achieved the Quest, you must bring us proof, in the form of a Book. But not just any Book. We want tales of extravagant ingredients, of revolutionary techniques, of familiar kitchen appliances put to unfamiliar uses. We want to see what you see. Taste what you taste. In short, we want complete and unparalleled access to your fantastical world'.

This book is a story written about ideas and the execution of those ideas. It follows the themes and cooking from Heston's TV shows Fantastical feasts which I found very interesting from a chef, food technologist and scientific point of view.

The book is written in a way that jumps about a bit without giving enough direct detail for recipe replication. There are recipes included with some pictures but methods are a bit sketchy. For example the magnetic floating food idea is pictured and talked about but no method detail is given.

The comments that I have made above don't make the book a bad book, but it makes it frustrating as a reference book if you want to make the dishes yourself. Combining the book with the TV series is of more assistance.

Overall it's a good book. More pictures would be great and recipe details would be better for me.

Heston Fantastical Feasts Heston Blumenthal 9781408808603 Books Reviews

After watching Heston's TV show ,and enjoyed very much, I Bought this Book as a Gift . I am sure this book will be enjoyed......
This book gives recipes and pictures of unique food ideas for parties. It also gives detailed instructions on how to pull off this fantasy of foods.
This guy's radical!
I'm doing a thesis of some recipes using Heston in one of his TV shows!

My question is this "The book has recipes" because it is what I need!

had already bought the book a few days ago from another seller! but unfortunately did not possess the book and return me the money! So for now I'd rather know if the book actually contains recipes!

I'm looking recipes including the first chapter of the book called fairy tale feats
This book is very useful only if you like his ideas from the show of the same title and want to replicate the Dramatic feasts. To me, he's a mad scientist in food but I respect him for his in depth knowledge, constant research in food related subjects and his logic and argument. You will never look at food the same way after reading his books. Apart from 'Fat Duck', I like almost all his cook books!
There are really no words to describe the genius & imagination behind Heston Blumental's creations. The book is a glimpse into his brain and how it works. I was almost tempted to lick a page to see if maybe it was really an elaborate masterpiece of his passed off as a book. This book is definitely for someone who is either a HUGE FOODIE or a HB fan. Someone with just a passing interest in food would probably not get much use from it.

Within you will find history, food knowledge, HB's past, recipes & how HB makes 1+1=100. Although the mini-chapters are kind of thrown here and there and don't really make much sense order wise I was never bored and did not want to put the book down. This book is a foodies DREAM. It is filled with regional facts on dishes and ingredients, time period information, culinary trips/adventures around the world, how to's and the finished dishes complete with pictures of some of the "works of art." From a Hansel & Gretel edible house you can fit inside, to a hike through the woods searching for poisonous mushrooms, to cooking with Play-Doh & making a Lobster Bisque with a coffee machine, the whimsy of each dish captures those enjoying them with every sense activated. I don't personally think I will ever make any of the recipes as they are very intricate and require some things that are not readily available but he certainly makes them seem quite doable to someone with the know how and equipment needed.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and hope he shares more of his insights soon!!!
Odds are good that if you're reading this review, you already know a little bit about Heston Blumenthal and his obsession with food. Odds are also good that you're pretty enthusiastic about the topic as well. If not, this book is not for you. If "foodie" or "culinary enthusiast" is way too mild to describe your absolute passion for all things food related, then this book might appeal. If you can relate to the experience of spending hours seeking out an obscure ingredient or spending days cooking many versions of the same dish, just to find the perfect expression of flavor, then this book is something to seriously consider.

Heston Blumenthal goes totally over the top in trying to create dining experiences, feasts that evoke a time, place and emotional response. He goes to Transylvania to learn about blood cookery for a Halloween feast, and he makes lickable wallpaper to evoke a sense of childlike wonder. The dishes are ridiculous, impossible and outrageous. They call for techniques and ingredients that are impossible for the home cook, using freeze dryers and a PacoJet and camel meat and poisonous mushrooms and gallons of blood and... and...

It's an extravaganza of culinary insanity, but it's absolutely amazing to read about the creation of these dishes. Blumenthal explores the emotional connection to food, trying to provide a different kind of eating experience for his feasters. Yes, there are very detailed recipes, but that is not why you should buy this book. It's about the way people relate to food, how they can go somewhere they've never been or travel back to a time that they have fond memories of.
