Exit Strategy Katerina Carter Fraud Thriller Series Book 1 eBook Colleen Cross

I liked the plot, but I did not love the book. The financial mystery and its complicated unraveling are excellent. What is missing is the human element. Every single one of the many characters that populate this story are little more than cardboard cutouts and stereotypes. This includes the important figures, as well as the bit players. You don't ever really get to know or care about any of them. Every person in the book is just a prop to unveil the financial mystery. They don't seem like real people and they certainly don't act like real people. Here is an example: A pet is slaughtered and left on the owner's porch with a death threat note attached to its body. It's clear that neither the slaughtered animal nor the note, fazes the recipient. She acts like it's not a big deal or even a sad event, She argues against reporting it to the police, because she already had contact with them earlier in the day. She is just tired of talking to police and has had enough police contact for one day already. Its not just that.... even with the death threat and numerous attempts on her life, she doesn't think twice about going for a solo 4:30 am jog in a deserted area. No real person would do that unless they were trying to be "bait" (she isn't) or had a death wish (she doesn't).

It's really too bad about the people in the book because the plot is wicked smart and explained well. That is actually pretty impressive because its a really complex financial mystery our forensic accountant is trying to solve. Done right, this could have been a truly great book. Unfortunately, the lack of authentic characters, reduces it to mediocre.

Exit Strategy Katerina Carter Fraud Thriller Series Book 1 eBook Colleen Cross Reviews

This book was obviously as well researched as it was well written. The story was intense and, at times, it moved almost too fast to follow. I did not have much knowledge regarding the issues of diamond regulations, legalities of such and methods for corruption for same. So, it was very much an eye-opener to all of this for me. It was necessary for me to go back & reread pages sometimes in order to understand all of the complexities for some of the things that took place. I guess my usual books are just not as complex as this book turned out to be. It is a very good book.
Exit Strategy by Colleen Cross and narrated by Peters Burchard is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. This has suspense, a mob boss and his daughter to deal with, illegal diamonds, kidnapping, murder, and money laundering! I did learn a lot about illegal diamond trading too. This was a fast paced, with constant on the go action and adventure that I had to listen to all in one sitting. Can't wait for more in the series! Great characters and excellent plot.
The narration was brilliant! Great performance!
Although I own this book I also listened to the audio version and my review is based on both versions.

Exit Strategy is my first book by Author Colleen Cross. Although I enjoyed the storyline it did get a bit technical at times but the way it was written and narrated I was able to understand the premise of forensic accounting and the authenticity of the diamonds, were they really from Liberty's mine?

Katerina Carter is hired by Susan Sullivan of Liberty Holdings to investigate the sudden disappearance of Paul Byrant and $5 billion which disappeared at the same time. After this obvious coincidence, there are two unexpected murders but it takes Kat to connect the dots, on the other hand, Officer Platt of the Vancouver police department seems to be floundering.

The story involves bribery, murder, money laundering, conflict diamonds, mobsters and an international criminal/terrorist. All of this activity doesn't seem to stop Kat from her investigation. Although she has been fired by Liberty, survived a murder attempt and is now deeper in debt than ever, she continues to try to solve the case without an apparent payout or recognition of any kind in sight.

Kat is an intelligent woman but despite all the warnings, the brutal slaying of her cat and the attempt on her life she takes no precautions and goes on an early morning jog along an isolated path and then gets kidnapped. I found that really hard to swallow.

The book is beautifully narrated, I had attempted to read this book some time ago but gave up, I found that I had no trouble taking in the story and fully understanding it when I listened to it. I'm so glad I did because it was definitely worth my time.
Exit Strategy (Katerina Carter Fraud Thriller Series Book 1) by Author Colleen Cross

Exit Strategy is my first exposure to Author Colleen Cross. On the most part, I really enjoyed the story line. At times, it did get a bit technical but if I had to reread a paragraph or two in order to better understand the art of forensic accounting and so on, I was more than willing to do so.

The protagonist, Katerina Carter, is hired by Liberty to pursue the sudden disappearance of Paul Byrant and $5 billion that disappears at the same time. After this obvious coincidence, two unexpected murders occur. It takes Kat to connect them together while Officer Platt of the Vancouver police department seems way out of his league. Murder, money laundering, conflict diamonds, mobsters, and world-wide criminal activity do not seem to daunt or deter Kat. Even after she is fired from Liberty and deep in debt, she continues to work doggedly to solve the case with no promise of remuneration or recognition of any kind.

As smart as Kat is and despite all the warning signs that her life may be in danger, she goes for an early morning jog on an isolated path and then gets kidnapped. Kat, as evidenced in many parts of the novel, seems way too intelligent to do such a dumb thing. After all, she figures out the whole sequence in the circle of criminal activities with very little outside assistance or cooperation.
